Garmin Rolls Out Battery Boost Update for Forerunner Watches

by Barbara Wilson

Garmin has released a new software update aimed at improving the battery life of its latest Forerunner smartwatches, following criticism over reduced performance compared to previous models.

The update, software version 6.17, targets the Garmin Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970, both of which feature upgraded AMOLED displays. While these brighter screens offer better visibility, they have also led to shorter battery life — a key concern for users who favor Garmin devices over Apple Watches for their long-lasting power.

In testing, the 47mm Forerunner 570 delivered only three to four days of use with the always-on display enabled, while the Forerunner 970 lasted four to five days. These results fall short of previous Forerunner models, which could typically stretch a full week or more under similar conditions.

The newly released update is currently available for both models. However, the main battery enhancement applies specifically to the 47mm Forerunner 570. Users should receive an automatic update prompt on their watches. If not, they can install it manually by holding the middle-left button to access the menu, navigating to System > Watch Settings > System > Software Update > Check For Updates.

According to Garmin’s changelog, the update promises to improve the “expected battery life on watch face.” While the phrasing is vague, it’s likely intended to boost overall efficiency in watch mode.

Officially, Garmin claims the Forerunner 970 should last up to 15 days in standard watch mode and the 47mm Forerunner 570 up to 11 days — with the display set to raise-to-wake. However, even under these conditions, some users report only six to seven days of battery life.

For athletes and frequent GPS users, the battery limitations have been particularly noticeable. Daily runs with GPS tracking, especially using the most power-intensive settings, quickly drain power. Users like the reviewer behind the report hope the new update restores the extended battery life that made previous Forerunner models so dependable.

Garmin has yet to confirm whether further updates are planned for battery performance, but version 6.17 is now live and offers a hopeful improvement for those who rely on their devices daily.
