Phillips has continued its impressive streak, achieving four consecutive years of 100% sell-through rates at its watch auctions. The upcoming New York Watch Auction promises to offer some extraordinary pieces, including the legendary Cosmograph Daytona “Big Red” and a stunning F.P. Journe Répétition Souveraine with a smoked sapphire dial. For those eager to see these remarkable watches in person, Phillips will open its exhibition space at 432 Park Avenue to the public starting June 4.
One of the standout pieces is a Patek Philippe reference 1518, an extraordinarily rare and important watch. With only 281 examples ever produced over a 14-year period, it holds the title of the world’s first serially produced perpetual chronograph. This particular yellow gold model, dating back to 1950, was kept in pristine condition for nearly 40 years by an American collector. The watch, featuring a white enamel dial, is highly coveted by calendar calendar Patek Philippe enthusiasts and is expected to attract significant attention.
Another highlight is a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6265, known as the “Big Red” for its distinct red “Daytona” text. What makes this particular piece even more special is its Formula 1 racing provenance. The watch was gifted to French F1 driver Jean-Pierre Jabouille after his victory at the 1979 French Grand Prix and has remained in his family for over 50 years. Engraved with the message “DIE TO DRIVE – RENAULT F1 – J.P.J. 79,” this piece is a true motorsport collector’s dream.
For those with a taste for contemporary craftsmanship, the F.P. Journe Répétition Souveraine will also be up for auction. Originally released in 2008 as the world’s thinnest minute repeater, this model still remains an icon of independent watchmaking. This specific piece features a smoked sapphire dial, allowing wearers to admire the complex system of gongs, hammers, and other 18-karat rose gold components. Offered by a single owner and housed in a stainless steel case, it stands out as a rare example of Journe’s ingenuity.
All three of these timepieces will certainly be the focus of attention when the auction takes place.
