Vacheron Constantin is bringing back one of its most elusive and revered timepieces: the steel 222. Originally released in 1977 for the brand’s 222nd anniversary, the model was produced in very limited quantities and has since become a cult favorite among watch collectors. Now, in 2025, the watch returns almost exactly as it was nearly five decades ago — and its timing couldn’t be better.
The 1970s were a challenging era for Swiss watchmakers. The rise of Japanese quartz technology disrupted traditional mechanical watchmaking, threatening even the most established names. In response, the “holy trinity” of Swiss watchmaking — Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin — all pivoted to create luxury sports watches made from stainless steel. These were designed for everyday wear but crafted to high Swiss standards.
Audemars Piguet launched the Royal Oak, and Patek Philippe followed with the Nautilus. Both were designed by the legendary Gérald Genta and have since become icons. Vacheron Constantin’s answer came in the form of the 222 — a rugged yet refined sports watch, created by a then-unknown designer, Jörg Hysek.
The 222 featured a unique notched bezel and an integrated bracelet design that stood apart from the more nautical-inspired aesthetics of its rivals. Unlike the Royal Oak and Nautilus, however, the 222 never became a household name. It was quietly discontinued in 1985 after a short production run. Only a few thousand were made, with several hundred in steel, making it one of the rarest pieces from that golden era.
Interest in the model has steadily grown, with vintage examples fetching more than £150,000 at auction and occasionally spotted on the wrists of collectors like Brad Pitt. Vacheron reignited excitement in 2022 with a gold reissue of the 222. Now, in 2025, the steel version is finally being re-released — priced at around £25,000 — and it’s already generating major buzz.
The new steel 222 stays true to its roots. The design is largely unchanged, featuring the same clean dial, notched bezel, and slim 37mm case that collectors covet today. Unlike many modern reissues, Vacheron resisted the urge to update or complicate the watch. It’s a purist’s dream — a sleek and simple reminder of when the brand dared to create something bold and different.
For years, Vacheron has focused on its more widely available Overseas line to satisfy demand for luxury sports models. But with the steel 222 finally rejoining the lineup, the brand is tapping into its deep heritage and offering something far rarer. In a world where many luxury sport watches have become mainstream, the 222 remains a symbol of understated distinction.
Its return speaks to a growing appetite among collectors for pieces with true rarity and historical weight. Vacheron Constantin has held onto the 222 like a hidden gem. Now, with its release, it may finally take its rightful place alongside the Royal Oak and Nautilus in the pantheon of horological legends.
