Chanel Unveils Striking Blue J12 to Mark 25th Anniversary

by Barbara Wilson

Chanel has introduced a bold new color for its iconic J12 watch line to mark the model’s 25th anniversary: a deep, sophisticated blue.

First launched in 2000, the J12 became a modern watchmaking icon for its groundbreaking use of ceramic cases and bracelets. Until now, the model was only available in black or white. “We knew from the beginning we could do more colors,” said Frédéric Grangié, president of Chanel Watches and Fine Jewelry. “But the one we brought to market had to be timeless.”

Now, for the first time, Chanel has added blue to the J12 family. But this isn’t just any blue—it took five years of research and development to create the perfect shade. Coloring ceramic is a complex process, requiring precision to maintain both durability and depth. The result is a matte, slightly satin finish that sets the new J12 Bleu apart.

Chanel has released nine new references in this blue ceramic, some featuring black PVD details, blue sapphires, or diamond-set tourbillons. The highlight is a highly exclusive version made from transparent blue sapphire.

Grangié believes the new color will appeal to both loyal J12 collectors and newcomers. “It feels different from the original black and white models. It’s a real evolution,” he said.

The J12 was originally designed by Jacques Helleu, Chanel’s then artistic director, as a personal project. He drew inspiration from the sleek lines of J-Class yachts and named the watch after the 12-meter racing category. Chanel boosted its credibility in watchmaking in 2019 by introducing the in-house Caliber 12.1, developed with Swiss manufacturer Kenissi. The movement, certified by the COSC, raised the J12’s standards for precision and performance.

Today, collectors are paying close attention. Investor and TV personality Kevin O’Leary recently bought a unique Chanel Boy.Friend watch at auction for nearly $250,000.

With the J12 Bleu, Chanel is sending a clear message: the brand is committed to serious watchmaking. “The J12 is here to stay,” said Grangié. “After 25 years, the watch world is taking notice.”
