Breitling has just unveiled the most significant update to its Superocean Heritage line since 2017, launching a refreshed collection that includes a highly anticipated new size. For those who found previous models too large—starting at 42mm—the highlight is a brand-new 40mm version that offers a more comfortable fit for many wrists.
The new cases are slimmer, with the 40mm model measuring 48.2mm lug-to-lug and a thin 11.73mm thickness. The polished case and lug design remain classic, but the crown now features a softer, mushroom-like shape. Across all sizes, the dials are more refined, drawing design cues from the Superocean Heritage ’57 series. The sunray-finished dial includes triangular hour markers and a distinctive marker at 12 o’clock. The applied scripted “B” logo is no longer gold, lending a more understated look. Text on the dial is simplified, and the typeface kerning in the “Breitling” logo has been adjusted to create more breathing space.
The iconic straight-end-link mesh bracelets are updated with a more integrated design, allowing the mesh to fit flush against the case. A rubber strap embossed with a mesh pattern is also offered.
On the back, a new sapphire caseback reveals the Breitling B31 automatic caliber, which features a 78-hour power reserve and beats at 4 Hz. This COSC-certified movement maintains high precision within -4 to +6 seconds per day. In addition to the 40mm size, the collection now includes 36mm, 42mm, and 44mm versions, along with a refreshed 42mm chronograph powered by the Caliber 01.
Prices for the new 40mm start at $6,200, with an extra $300 for the bracelet option. The introduction of smaller sizes reflects current trends, moving away from the oversized 46mm models. The 36mm options, available in blue and mint green, offer a versatile, unisex appeal as compact dive watches. Larger sizes remain for those who prefer them, making the Superocean Heritage line suitable for every wrist.
Most exciting are the subtle dial updates that create a sleek, versatile look. While Breitling is known for bold designs, this toned-down approach could attract new customers without alienating existing fans. This update signals Breitling’s thoughtful direction this year and suggests a promising trend for future releases.
