At this year’s Met Gala, Omega quietly revealed an unreleased gold Speedmaster watch. The luxury Swiss brand continued its recent strategy of previewing new models on celebrities, using the event’s global stage to spark interest among watch enthusiasts.
Actor Colman Domingo, a Friend of the Brand, wore the new 18ct gold Speedmaster under his cuff. Omega confirmed only that it was an unreleased model but declined to provide further details.
Watch expert Chris Hall, founder of The Fourth Wheel newsletter and co-host of The Watch Inquiry podcast, believes the piece appears to be a 42mm Speedmaster Moonwatch in yellow “Moonshine” gold. It features a reverse panda dial—a black dial with contrasting white subdials—and a white tachymeter bezel. Hall noted there were no diamonds visible, just clean white minute markers and gold hands.
Omega has used this soft-launch method before, often placing unreleased watches on the wrists of brand ambassador Daniel Craig. In recent months, Craig has debuted several unreleased models, including the black aluminum Seamaster Diver 300M “Daniel Craig” Edition and a Seamaster in Omega’s proprietary Bronze Gold alloy with a burgundy bezel. He was also the first to wear the white lacquered Speedmaster Moonwatch, which officially launched in March 2024 and has since become a best-seller.
This subtle but strategic marketing tactic has become a hallmark of Omega’s launch playbook. While once done quietly, the brand now openly acknowledges the “unreleased” status of these pieces, generating buzz without traditional advertising.
“Years ago, they wouldn’t even mention it,” Hall said. “Now they’re leaning into the mystery—and it clearly works. We’re all talking about it.”
Based on past patterns, collectors can likely expect an official release of the gold Speedmaster by late summer—possibly as soon as August.
