At last night’s Met Gala, Swiss luxury brand Omega unveiled a new watch, continuing its strategy of showcasing unreleased models through A-list celebrities, allowing online watch enthusiasts to spread the word.
Over the past 18 months, Omega has teased several upcoming timepieces on the wrists of high-profile figures, particularly actor Daniel Craig. One example was the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M “Daniel Craig” Edition, which first appeared on Craig’s wrist at the Paris Olympics last summer. This model featured a black aluminum dial and bezel, a domed sapphire crystal, and a mesh bracelet similar to Omega’s previous “007 Edition”. It officially launched in November 2024.
Another notable preview came in November 2024, when Craig wore a Seamaster Diver 300M crafted from Omega’s proprietary “Bronze Gold” alloy. It featured a burgundy aluminum bezel and a sandblasted black aluminum dial, debuting at the Governors Awards in Los Angeles.
Before these, Craig was seen sporting the Speedmaster Moonwatch with a white lacquered dial at the Planet Omega Exhibition in New York City in November 2023. This model, which later launched in March 2024, has since become a popular item among collectors.
Now, Omega has teased a gold Speedmaster worn by actor Colman Domingo at the Met Gala. Described only as “an unreleased Speedmaster watch in 18ct gold,” the timepiece was visible under Domingo’s cuff. Omega representatives have declined to provide additional details about the watch.
Watch expert Chris Hall, founder of The Fourth Wheel newsletter, believes the watch is a standard 42mm Speedmaster Moonwatch in Omega’s “moonshine” yellow gold with a reverse panda dial. He also notes that the bezel features white tachymeter markings, and the minute markers on the dial are white as well. The gold hands complete the look, though Hall confirms that there are no visible diamonds.
The growing transparency about Omega’s marketing strategy highlights how effective this method has become. In the past, Omega kept details about such “mystery” watches quiet, but now it openly acknowledges the approach. “It’s clearly working—after all, we’re talking about it,” says Hall.
Watch enthusiasts are now eagerly awaiting the official release of this latest Speedmaster, with many speculating that it could be revealed by August, based on past trends.
