Amida, the revived 1970s retro-futuristic watch brand, has introduced a new version of its iconic Digitrend model. Called the Digitrend Open Sapphire, this edition features a domed sapphire crystal that reveals the watch’s inner workings.
The new model keeps the same design and function as the original. It measures 39.6mm by 39mm in stainless steel and runs on an automatic Soprod NEWTON P092 movement. This movement powers a jumping hour and wandering minute display and offers a 44-hour power reserve with 28,800 vibrations per hour. The watch is 16mm thick due to the vertical display system.
The Digitrend uses a prism to reflect the hour and minute discs, showing the time vertically on what usually would be the watch’s side. The new Open Sapphire design replaces the earlier full steel top with a shaped sapphire crystal, giving a clear view of the movement and the jump hour mechanism. The numerals appear backwards until reflected through the prism, creating a unique driver’s watch experience.
The movement is decorated with details like Geneva stripes, circular graining, brushing, and a skeletonized oscillating weight with rhodium plating. The watch comes with a charcoal Alcantara strap lined with orange calfskin and an 18mm steel buckle. A metal bracelet is available as an option.
This limited edition is capped at 150 pieces and priced at CHF 4,500, a notable increase from the steel bracelet model at CHF 2,900. The higher price reflects the difficulty and cost of crafting the shaped sapphire crystal.
The watch’s thickness is focused mostly on the top, helping it sit comfortably and low on the wrist. While it might not fit easily under tight shirt cuffs, it remains comfortable to wear. The display’s unique style may not appeal to everyone, but it delivers an impressive and creative way to tell time.
