Tudor’s Black Bay 54 “Lagoon Blue” Blends Style and Function

by Barbara Wilson

Summer in New York City often brings unpredictable weather — sunshine one day, sudden rain the next. Amid the shifting conditions, a well-chosen watch can be both a style statement and a daily companion. Enter the Tudor Black Bay 54 “Lagoon Blue,” a striking update to the 2023 original 37mm dive watch.

This new version stands out with a fresh tone. The dial features an ice-blue metallic finish with a sand-textured shimmer, paired with a polished relief bezel and a five-link bracelet. The look is brighter and more refined, giving the watch a dressier feel. Yet it still maintains its tool-watch identity, offering 200 meters of water resistance and the COSC-certified MT5400 movement.

Retailing at $4,350, Tudor seems to be testing whether this updated Black Bay can reach new audiences — especially those who may have found earlier models too rugged. Compared to Tudor’s more utilitarian 43mm Pelagos FXD Chrono released at Watches and Wonders, the Lagoon Blue feels lighter, both in appearance and intention.

For many watch fans, the original BB54 was a welcome shift. It was a practical, well-designed dive watch that finally catered to those wanting something smaller — a 37mm diameter that was robust, sporty, and wearable beyond just watch events. It appealed to enthusiasts who often felt overlooked, including women who wanted a high-quality dive watch without overtly feminine design features.

The Lagoon Blue edition appears to take this further. The polished finish, shimmering dial, and softened dive-watch styling clearly aim to attract a broader market, especially female wearers. While not explicitly marketed as a women’s watch, its design choices suggest a deliberate move toward inclusion.

The watch fits comfortably on the wrist. Like its predecessor, it retains the same dimensions and a bit of heft — a signature of Tudor craftsmanship. The dial sparkles in the light with a beauty reminiscent of sunlit makeup, textured and elegant without being fragile.

Though the watch industry has often relied on outdated gender cues, Tudor’s latest release avoids clichés. It delivers a thoughtful blend of form and function, using color and design to expand the definition of what a dive watch can be.

In an era where many luxury brands seem creatively stagnant, Tudor’s Black Bay 54 “Lagoon Blue” feels refreshing. It’s a modest, grounded take on luxury — inspired by the outdoors and accessible in spirit. As the conversation around watch size and inclusivity evolves, the Lagoon Blue may help lead the way.
