PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Rhode Island man’s heartfelt gift to his wife took an unexpected turn when a typo turned a “Trump” watch into a “Rump” watch.
Tim Petit spent $640 on a limited-edition Donald Trump-branded timepiece, one of only 250 made, as a special gift for his wife, Melanie. What arrived, however, was a watch missing the letter “T” in “Trump” on the face, leaving behind the word “RUMP.”
“I thought it was really nice. It was beautiful, and I knew it would be something that she’d like,” said Tim.
He had discovered the watch through a radio ad featuring former President Trump’s voice. Curious, Tim visited gettrumpwatches.com and selected the Pink Inauguration First Lady model for his wife.
Melanie liked the style, but instantly noticed the error.
“I noticed it right away. The T is missing. It just says R-U-M-P,” she said. “How could they process this and go through something without checking their work?”
Tim added, “I’m very disappointed. I wanted it to be something special. We expected it would carry the integrity of the president’s name.”
The website describes its products as the “official watches of President Trump,” but fine print clarifies that the site is not affiliated with Donald Trump, his companies, or any political campaign. It operates under a licensed use of Trump’s name and likeness.
Tim believes the licensing team should take responsibility. “Someone dropped the ball big time,” he said. “And an apology would be nice for making my wife cry.”
The couple initially struggled to get a response from the company. However, the business has since contacted them, apologized, and promised to replace the watch. They also offered the couple an $800 coupon for future purchases.
