Citizen Marks 40 Years of Aqualand With Bold New Limited Edition

by Barbara Wilson

Citizen has unveiled a new limited-edition timepiece to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its Promaster Aqualand line. Known for combining analog and digital features with serious dive functionality, the Aqualand has earned a cult following over four decades. Now, the brand is paying tribute to one of its most iconic vintage designs.

The Citizen Promaster Aqualand 40th Anniversary Limited Edition is a modern revival of the two-tone matte gray and gold version that fans of the model have long admired. Limited to 5,800 pieces, the watch is not ultra-rare but is expected to draw strong interest from collectors and dive watch enthusiasts.

The watch measures 50.7mm across when including the depth sensor at 9 o’clock, though the main case is closer to 44mm in width. It’s made of stainless steel, 14.8mm thick, with a 24mm lug width and rated for 200 meters of water resistance.

Like earlier Aqualand models, it features a range of tools built for divers. In addition to standard timekeeping, calendar, alarm, and chronograph functions, the digital display works in tandem with the depth sensor to track dive time and alert wearers if their ascent rate is too fast.

Visually, this edition sets itself apart with a black sunray dial, gold-accented hands and indices, and gold plating on the bezel, pushers, crown, and depth sensor. The caseback bears a special 40th anniversary engraving, with the depth sensor creatively illustrated inside the “0” of “40.”

Priced at $595, the watch will be available starting in July, offering a mix of retro charm and practical functionality. Its styling—especially the gold detailing—leans heavily into an ‘80s aesthetic that many longtime fans will appreciate.

For collectors, the new Aqualand hits the right notes: a faithful nod to a beloved classic, enhanced with thoughtful modern updates. For newcomers, it offers a unique blend of analog dive watch and vintage tech look at an accessible price point.

As one enthusiast put it, the Aqualand remains “both futuristic and anachronistically ’80s'”—a rare and enduring appeal that Citizen continues to embrace.
