Apple Plans Camera-Equipped AirPods and Watch by 2027

by Barbara Wilson

Apple is developing new versions of the AirPods and Apple Watch that feature built-in cameras, with a possible launch set for 2027, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The devices will use new custom chips. The Apple Watch version will run on a chip codenamed “Nevis,” while the AirPods will use a chip known as “Glennie.”

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously shared that Apple is exploring infrared cameras for the AirPods. These could improve spatial audio when paired with devices like the Vision Pro and might allow users to control the AirPods with hand gestures.

Journalist Mark Gurman also reported that Apple is considering using these cameras to gather visual data for AI functions.

For the Apple Watch, one model may have a camera built into the screen. Another, possibly a future version of the Apple Watch Ultra, could place a camera near the Digital Crown. These cameras would enable features such as recognizing the user’s environment or offering better navigation.

Unlike standard cameras, these would not be used for taking pictures or making FaceTime calls. Instead, they would power on-device AI by collecting visual input.
