Apple has announced a major step in its climate strategy, revealing a 60% reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions since 2015. The company shared the update as part of its 2024 Environmental Progress Report, reinforcing its goal to reach full carbon neutrality across all operations by 2030.
“We’re incredibly proud of the progress we’re making toward Apple 2030, which touches every part of our business,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. She highlighted innovation, collaboration, and urgency as key drivers behind the company’s approach.
Apple’s 2030 plan aims to cut emissions by 75% from 2015 levels, using high-quality carbon credits to offset the remaining emissions. In 2023 alone, Apple avoided approximately 41 million metric tons of greenhouse gases through clean energy use and more recycled materials in its products.
Among other milestones, the company now uses 99% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 99% recycled cobalt in every Apple-designed battery.
To mark Earth Day, Apple is launching several initiatives to raise awareness and promote sustainability. Customers can recycle old Apple products at Apple Stores worldwide through Apple Trade In and receive credit or ensure responsible disposal. Until May 16, eligible in-store recycling will earn customers 10% off a new Apple accessory.
Apple Watch users are also encouraged to participate in Earth Day activities. Completing a 30-minute workout on April 22 will unlock a limited-edition award. Fitness+ subscribers can enjoy Earth-themed workouts, including a new Time to Walk episode with actress and climate advocate Shailene Woodley. Other offerings include guided runs in scenic natural locations and ocean breathing meditations.
Apple continues to focus on integrating sustainability into every aspect of its business, from product design to supply chain operations, while encouraging its global user base to join in protecting the planet.
