Fondly remembered for his warm demeanor and masterful craftsmanship, Wikstrom’s legacy at Three Crown Jewelry on Great Plain Avenue extends far beyond his impeccable repair skills.
A scion of a long line of watchmakers, Wikstrom’s passion for horology blossomed under the tutelage of his father in the densely wooded landscapes of Varmland County, Sweden. After traversing continents and honing his craft in various cities across the United States, he finally realized his dream of owning his own business in 1991 with the establishment of Three Crown Jewelry in Needham Center.
Affectionately described as a “gentle, positive man of few words,” Wikstrom’s approach to his trade was characterized by an unwavering dedication to his workbench, where he would meticulously repair and restore timepieces. His shop, often adorned with Scandinavian holiday decorations and the inviting aroma of mulled wine, served as a community hub where patrons would gather not just for expert repairs but for the comfort of Wikstrom’s genial company.
“Bert was a longtime customer, an honest businessman, a true gentleman and someone you could count on,” recalled Mario Piccirilli, owner of La Moda Salon, reflecting on Wikstrom’s amiable presence in the neighborhood.
Jami Strangio, co-owner of 2nd Hand Rose of Needham, fondly reminisced about Wikstrom’s calming grandfatherly aura, a sentiment echoed by many who frequented his shop. Wikstrom’s kindness and skill transcended mere watch repair; he became an integral part of the fabric of the community, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who crossed paths with him.
Despite his expertise, Wikstrom chose not to pass down his cherished trade to his sons, believing that watch repair was a fading art form. His sons, Toby and the rest of his family, mourn the loss of a dedicated, kind-hearted individual who brought solace and warmth to the bustling streets of Needham.
As the community grapples with the loss of this exceptional craftsman, Wikstrom’s legacy as the compassionate Swedish watchmaker, diligently plying his trade and engaging in heartfelt conversations with his patrons, will forever remain etched in the annals of Needham’s history.
