Surging Theft Epidemic: Skyrocketing Value of Stolen Luxury Watches

by Barbara Wilson

A startling escalation in luxury watch thefts has culminated in an astounding revelation – over £1 billion worth of high-end timepieces have vanished into thin air. This alarming surge in luxury watch robberies has prompted a deeper analysis of the situation, unraveling a disconcerting trend that threatens to disrupt the world of horology.

The Watch Register, a global crime prevention database, has meticulously documented the staggering scope of this issue. A remarkable 6,815 watches have been newly logged in the past year alone, marking an unprecedented 60 per cent surge in fresh watch entries. Among these entries, Rolex watches – with their iconic models such as Daytona, GMT, and Oyster Perpetual – make up a staggering 44 per cent. The Swiss giants Omega and Breitling round out the top three, accounting for 7 per cent and 6 per cent respectively. The combined value of these stolen timepieces is estimated to be a staggering £1 billion, including several watches valued at £100,000 or more each.

The backdrop for this disconcerting revelation is a series of high-profile robberies and smash-and-grab incidents, particularly in London and the surrounding home counties. In these instances, gangs of armed perpetrators, referred to as “Rolex ripper” groups, execute audacious heists, instigating an environment of fear and insecurity among watch enthusiasts and collectors.

As the data suggests, luxury watches are predominantly targeted due to their impressive retail value. Among the watches logged, 90 per cent are men’s models, accentuating their desirability among criminal networks. While the statistics indicate that 35 per cent of stolen watches are retrieved within six months and 50 per cent within a year, a successful recovery hinges on the availability of a recorded serial number.

Katya Hills, the managing director of the Watch Register, emphasizes the gravity of the situation, stating, “The considerable value and prestige of these high-end timepieces continues to attract the attention of sophisticated and international criminal networks, making them a prime target for theft.” The surge in luxury watch thefts serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with safeguarding these valuable possessions. Hills underscores the importance of comprehensive insurance coverage, photograph documentation, and meticulous record-keeping of the watch’s unique serial number to expedite recovery processes in the unfortunate event of theft or loss.

Even public figures have not been immune to these calculated thefts. Renowned individuals such as boxer Amir Khan and cyclist Mark Cavendish have experienced firsthand the threat posed by these luxury watch heists. For instance, two individuals were sentenced to over 17 years in jail for robbing a diamond-encrusted Franck Muller watch worth £70,000 from Amir Khan at gunpoint in Leyton, London.

Notably, the rash of luxury watch robberies is not confined to solitary incidents. In a case that paints a grim picture of the level of violence and planning involved, Romario Henry and Ali Sesay received sentences of 15 years and 12 years respectively for their meticulously planned raid on Mark Cavendish’s residence. This operation saw them pilfer two Richard Mille watches valued at £400,000 and £300,000, along with other valuables. Their audacious heist took place in the early hours of November 27, 2021, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Furthermore, in a separate incident, two culprits engaged in a spree of 12 high-value watch robberies across London during the preceding summer. Asonu McKenzie and Reshaun Nembhard, both 29, orchestrated a reign of terror, prowling the streets in a silver Audi Q2 to identify their targets. The subsequent attacks saw them employing blunt objects to incapacitate their victims before snatching their watches. The toll of their actions was grim – victims sustained a range of injuries, from cuts and bruises to fractured skulls. One victim’s sight was even jeopardized due to the violent nature of the attacks.

The Metropolitan Police, fully aware of the physical, emotional, and psychological ramifications of these violent acts, is steadfast in its resolve to bring these criminals to justice. Acting Detective Sergeant Ash Francis emphasizes, “Robbery is a violent and often traumatizing crime, and we remain committed to tackling robbery in all of its forms.” The urgency to address these escalating thefts resonates, highlighting the vital importance of curbing these rampant criminal activities that continue to cast a shadow over the world of luxury timepieces.
